Ooh, I have an image of it biting your bare foot and then the rake handle coming up to say hello to your eye, just like in a Tom and Jerry cartoon. I hope it was all just poetic imagining!

I was knocked silly when I was about six years old by the handle hitting square between the eyes. And it did seem like it had just “sprung from the grass.” :0

So far, I have never set my rake down with the teeth upward. If I ever do that, arcane quantum mechanical calculations predict that I will probably step on it soon afterward. The rake’s handle is too short to reach my head, but it could give me a memorable clunk in the junk.

Being a mad scientist, I responded to your scepticism with measurement. My rake has a 43-inch handle and would actually clunk me in the stomach. Now my scientific scruples tussle with the urge to take poetic license in a haiku about a Demon Rake:
A short-handled rake
waits (teeth up) to deliver
a clunk in the junk.
Ending with “a clunk in the gut” would not have the same zing. 😦

I stepped on a rake once. It was a good bang. When I composed myself, I headed to the garden shed to look in the mirror and estimate the damage, but my young daughter run behind me screaming ‘Don’t look, don’t look!’ Was she right! 🙂
