Hexenring
(By Elusive Trope)
traversing
betwixt day and night
familiar
dun forest
now rife with ferment scurry
the legs move in haste
,
snap of twigs
a rustle in brush
an inkling
of menace
above all else stay on path
gallop as brisk wind
,
enough sun
to reveal path gone
a panic
now frozen
within dreaded hexenring
encircled and cursed
.
a misstep
interlope the sacred
dwindle light
morph to bleak
whirl around though no way out
the ring of fungi
.
wisp of wings
swirl and swarm his mind
the hissing
dance dance dance
twirl to a maddening note
compelled pirouette
.
coil uncoil
a fairy wheezes
do a jig
jig for us
again and again the wheeze
the muscles weaken
.
now voices
his screams to himself
just collapse
take your death
the wheezing turns to laughter
hideous chuckles
.
dew on grass
awaken to dawn
unknown hill
still alive
yet for how long how much time
the curse in his blood
.
life is short
now life is shorter
punishment
for the breach
the dance must have appeased them
gave delight
.
burned in soul
the hex slicing time
discover
antidote
a solemn quest his burden
made with rising sun
Author’s note: Another installment in my attempt to compose a multi-stanza shadorma centered around Cabala: Spiegel der Kunst vnd Natur [Cabala: Mirror or Art and Nature] published in 1654 by Stephan Michelspacher. The alchemical text was a small quarto pamphlet, numbering a slender eight leaves, together with four large folding plates.

Filled with energy and despair. My heart rate and breathing literally increased just reading the poem. When words can create physiological change, you know there is great meaning and strength behind them. Well done.

I like this very much, but I have to say “a fairy wheezes” stopped me in my tracks. 😉
