It’s Christmas morning, and I feel your arms encircle me. I smile; half asleep. Your hands touch me.

“Cold hands!” I squeal.

My eyes fly open. You never have cold hands.

“Are you sick?” I turn to you.

I’m all alone.

My skin burns in the places I was touched.

  1. Extreme changes in temperature (both hot and cold) are capable of producing “burning pain.” This poem created an image I can only describe as:

“Alone, in a bedroom that once held two, we feel the pain of heat from a passion’s past followed by a sudden painful chill caused by loneliness and the realization of a bedroom that now sleeps one.” This joy/sadness is a part of many lives.

You know how to create such emotional imagery and do it so well.
