I sell collectibles and art online and often find the things I've found have hilarious and at times, dark stories to tell. It's thrilling for me to be creatively random, so always expect the unexpected in the things I share with you.
Death leaned in with a kiss –
stealing my breath away.
He brought me poppy flowers –
blood red with a scent of decay.
Feeling light headed and weak,
I swayed, and he held my hand.
Never would I have guessed
Death could be such a gentleman.
He sang a lullaby into my ear,
and I felt my eyelids droop.
Good night poppies, I murmured,
as Death drew the curtains closed.
Poppies have long been a symbol of sleep and death. Read my haiku poetry about these captivating flowers by clicking —
Indeed poppies in the fields of Flanders (Vlaanderen) are such a symbol of death, the horror of wars ..how could it be something so vulnerable can be so strong. Beautiful poem, Poet…xx

Three times in the past twenty
minutes I have tried to leave a comment
on your five Haikus. Flowers for death,
on Slasher Monster.
But the comment is not showing up. 😟
I fixed it on my end and will be on the look out in case it happens again. Perhaps you've angered the WordPress spirits? They don't like competing with debonair British gents born in Ireland.
As long as I have play every possible hand
I’ve been dealt
Than that sweet whisper in my ear
Would be so bad
Red happens to be my favorite color
Great read Rose
Thank you my friend
For all Your kindness
And for holding my hand
In times of need
Any thing you need

Let’s hope for a long and happy life; you and I. I love red, as well, Shel. What are friends for, darling? Keep writing, and the world will be right as rain. ❤
Lovely poem and a good use of Inese’s photograph too. (I’m also a fan of her blog.) Your version of death was rather more refined and sophisticated than I expected. I now have an image of him sounding rather like Vincent Price.
LOL. How I adore Vincent Price!! Very perceptive you are! I shall call you BunK — James BunK. That was one of my favorite posts of yours when you compared yourself to 007. So many similarities — quite uncanny, really! 😉
If there is one person who can make even the death look like something best , it can be you poetess 😊 I re read it three times before commenting below, this one just left me aww struck coz of the topic 😊
Indeed it is fun, people always tend to love the good side of someone when it comes to hard part or the dark people tend to skip it.people don’t what is like to embrace the dark side of something or someone. You know poems like are the reason i call you the poetess 😊
This is a wonderful ode to Death. Life is a stage indeed and, we all have to leave this stage once we finish playing our part. Death will inevitably draw the curtains… 🙂
Me too. I loved the entire movie, in fact, and still enjoy watching it every few years. I must still be a kid at heart.
And reading your work is my pleasure. 😊
Another beautiful surprise! You are so talented, Rose, and so wise. Death is a part of life. Isn’t it amazing that a dreamy and sophisticated poppy flower with a very subtle scent and fragile look was chosen to symbolize death. There are some truly deadly plants known to the mankind, but this one is rather about transition than suffering. Thank you again, my friend! xx
There’s your positive outlook again, darling Inese! Your words are as extraordinary as your photographs. Transition rather than suffering is a fantastic viewpoint on the lovely poppies. My pleasure, sweet friend! xo
Briliiant, Rose. I could see this as an oil painting (the Golden Dutch Age/Pre-Raphaelites). 🙂
PS. I think the link between poppies and death is because of the Opium poppy.
Very nice Rose!

This is lovely Rose. Poppies always make me think of my father who is dead. Plus all the soldiers that died since WW1.

I can’t think of a better tribute to your father and the soldiers than these beautiful flowers. Thank you Lady Sol. xo
