“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”
― Neil Gaiman, Coraline

Through thorny forests and carmine streams,
she straddles her horse in dream-filled sleep.
Nightmares crawl from beneath rocks
when her celestial eyes droop shut.

Stars abound in the night skies –
oblivious of the terror the dark hides.
She’s not a princess nor a knight,
and she wears no armor to her fights.

The dragon looms and awaits her.
He’s forged from her childhood horrors.
As she approaches, he scorches her skin.
It’s a familiar pain that never ends.

She gnashes her teeth. Enough is enough!
It’s time she faced her fears; they must stop.
With a keen sword, she severs his head clean
and sighs gratefully. No more dragons in her dreams.

    • I admire Gaiman, but I can’t say I’ve read enough of his work to call myself a fan. Funny you say that! I started out writing about a dragonfly, then somehow, my pen got possessed or something and began writing about a bigger dragon altogether! True story. Has that ever happened to you before when you start out with an idea and it morphs into something else? 🐲🐉

  2. That was a great poem. I have a serious question I want to ask for once. It struck me that the girl had a male dragon. I’m a man (apparently), but I’d automatically think of a scary dragon as female. (I’m so sorry, female-kind!). Now I’m wondering if that’s just me being an oddball, or if there might be some kind of more general pattern at work here. (My money is on me being an oddball.)

    • Thank you, BunK! Such a serious question from you! I have to sit and ponder. Okay, I’m also putting on my unsmiling face. Hmm. Hmmm. I think you must’ve been scared by female dragons when you were just a little bag head. This girl, in my poem, was tormented by a mean male dragon who lived by the sea. I think his name was Puff. Yep. True story. 😜 💋

      • Oh, I remember Puff! I loved that rascal! All that frolicking in the Autumn mist that he got up to. Ha, great stuff!

Sad how it all ended, though, with him slipping into his cave and ceasing his fearless roar. So tragic…
