I have a feeling those headstones weren’t touched for a very long time! At least a hundred years.
(I used to walk through this graveyard on the way to school many years ago, which granted me plenty of free time to do nothing before my first class started).

I did so want to know the history of your beautiful cemetery. Whenever I visit Connecticut, I’m amazed how the cemeteries have no fences. That would never fly in Seattle as I’m sure the headstones would be grabbed as mementos.

I don’t know the exact history of the graveyards around where I live, but they are quite old. Some of the graves are far too weathered to read any names or dates.
Nobody steals the gravestones because vampires love to hang out in New England cemeteries.

New England once suffered through a strange vampiric hysteria: graves were excavated and stakes were discovered impaled through the mouths of the bodies.
I suppose that’s how you really stake a vamp!

Wow. I never heard of that! Do you know when this hysteria happened? Whoever staked the “vampires” in the mouths also wanted to make sure they couldn’t tell anyone who did it. Freaky.

Oh my gosh, the first link was incredible and disturbing to read! It does make sense with TB that had afflicted/killed people, and symptoms were bloody coughs, red cheeks, and sunken eyes. Another great argument to get your kids vaccinated! THANK YOU for the link, Fly. It was fascinating and may come in handy one day.
Vampire paranoia hit globally; it would appear! And what a photograph — chills me to the bone!!
